- What You Will Need:
Unique Originals' Architectural Products are light
weight and easy to install. Since they cut like wood paneling,
all you need is simple carpenter tools; a hammer, saw, mitre
box, tape measure, level, nail-set, wood file, 1 ½" and 2" finishing
nails, industrial adhesive, sand paper and Unique Originals'
Flexible Grout.
- Arrange Panels:
Arrange your panels the way you want them on your
wall. Take note of the repeat patterns and the alternating block
sizes. Start with a full panel against the ceiling. Cut panels
as necessary to fit your overall design needs.
- Apply Adhesive:
Wipe off any dust or dirt from your wall and the
back of the panels. Apply a generous amount of panel adhesive,
such as Liquid Nails or the equivalent, to the back of the panel.
- Mount Panel to Wall:
Press the panel firmly into place on your wall. Make sure the
panel is square both vertically and horizontally. Secure in
place with 1 ½" finishing nails. If you are not using a nail
gun, you will have to recess each nail with a nail set. Use
a generous quantity of nails and don't worry about the holes,
as they will disappear with a little dab of our color matched
Flexible Grout.
Apply all the following panels in the same manner. Place your
panels together as tight as possible, but don't worry if a slight
space is open at some point between the panels, this will be
grouted in. The important step to remember is to have each panel
square and your grout lines matched or lined up.
- Optional Pilasters:
If you are using pilasters apply them now. Measure and cut pilaster
as necessary. Start nails at a 45 degree angle approximately
½" from the back of the pilaster. Apply a bead of adhesive to
the inside edge of each leg of the pilaster. If you put too
much on or too close to the outer edge, it will squeeze out
when you press in onto the panels. This will be hard to clean
off. Press the pilaster into place, making sure it is straight
vertically, and that the grout lines line up with the grout
lines on your panels. Nail in the pre-started nails and recess
with a nail set.
- Optional Crowns and Bases:
If you are using crown and base molding apply
them now. Apply a bead of adhesive to the top and bottom of
the molding. Press firmly into place. Secure with 2" nails through
the thin section of the molding. When going around the pilaster
and corners, you must mitre the molding at 45 degree angles,
the same way you would with wood molding. Use panel adhesive
on your mitre joints and hold together with 2" nails.
- Grout Application:
Cut the tip off the tube of Unique Originals Flexible Grout
at a slight angle, opening a hole approximately 1/4". Estimated
usage at a bead of 1/4" to be approximately 40 linear feet per
tube. Apply a bead of grout at all joints; where the panels
meet one another, where the pilasters meet the panels, where
the molding elements meet the panel, and all of your mitre joints.
Be sure you apply enough grout to fill your joints. Prior to
grouting your outside mitre joints, round off the joint with
a file or sand paper and then dab on the grout with your finger.
To make the grout lines perfect, take a damp (not wet) brush
or sponge and very lightly brush your lines. Also lightly brush
all your mitre joints. Dab a tiny bit of grout in to any nail
holes or damaged areas that are showing.
